Stephen Stubbs - Chair and Trustee

  • Founder, Chair and Trustee of UDCLT
  • The third generation of his family living in the Dale
  • Electrician and entrepreneur with 46 years’ experience in construction trades
  • Father and grandfather
  • Chair of Arkengarthdale Parish Council, Serving the local community for 20 + years
  • Volunteer coordinating and facilitating installations of Reeth Rural Radio Network, a not-for-profit company focused on providing the more remote Dales properties with a decent broadband service
  • Passionate about creating opportunities locally for the young to live and work in the Upper Dales
“If I could wave a magic wand for housing, I would ensure that all local villages had a number of affordable homes with a mixture of tenancies - rent, buying equity over time and outright purchase. This would provide a good mixture of opportunities for local people.

Holiday cottages and second homes have a range of impacts on the local community - for example, people are not registered with the local doctors, children don't go to the local schools and younger people move out of the area to seek better paid work and affordable accommodation.”
County Councillor Yvonne Peacock - Trustee
  • Richmondshire District Councillor since 1999, North Yorkshire County Councillor since 2019
  • Born, raised and still lives in Bainbridge, Wensleydale
  • Considerable knowledge of the area and of local people as a result – she firmly believes local contacts can help to get things done
  • Yvonne opened and ran a tearoom in 1980, which still continues today.
  • Has always had an interest in housing issues, and recognises there is still a shortage
  • Her greatest achievement is the building of Sycamore Hall and the associated developments, providing nearly 70 residential units for a wide range of age groups in Bainbridge
"There is a enormous need to provide affordable housing to retain young people locally.  This is vital to secure the sustainable economic future of local communities. In the unique environment of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, increasing prices of property recently has made this extremely challenging."
William Fawcett - Trustee

  • Worked in Construction Industry, Catering/Food Production and Accountancy
  • Past member and Treasurer of Dales Watch
  • Owns and rents of a number of properties in the local area
“I want to do what I can to help provide reasonably priced housing for younger people who are looking to stay in the area – it should be possible for them to find an affordable home in the Upper Dales they grew up in.”
Julie Fox - Trustee

"Everyone should have the opportunity of a good home in a place where they have roots. Having a holiday cottage in the Dales, I appreciate I am part of the problem, but by volunteering for the community land trust and supporting this important work, I hope it demonstrates I can also be part of the solution."
John Matthews - Trustee

“I've always wanted to use my acquired knowledge and skills to help organisations that cannot afford to pay for mainstream consultancy services.  Working with the Upper Dales Community Land Trust enables me to do that and at the same time help local people to get local housing at an affordable cost."
 Annie Wallace - Volunteer
Picture
  • Has worked as a marketer for most of her career, predominantly in education and healthcare
  • Has lived in Yorkshire for 25 years but only moved to Arkengarthdale four years ago
  • Enjoys working with other enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers towards tangible improvements in local affordable housing provision
“Having relatively recently moved to this special Upper Dales community I want to do what I can to help it thrive so its history and culture are protected and future generations can stay in the areas they grew up in.”
